After one of the worst stadium disasters in sports history resulted in 135 fatalities last October, two Indonesian football teams faced off for the first time since the incident.
The match between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya took place on Tuesday at a stadium owned by the national police force in Jakarta.
No fans were in attendance, and Persebaya won the match 1-0. Arema coach Joko Susilo revealed that some of his players did not participate due to the psychological impact of the previous game.
Despite only a handful of media personnel and club officials being present inside the stadium, hundreds of police officers were stationed outside to provide security.
Following the previous match, a report found that the use of tear gas by Indonesian police triggered the deadly stampede, leading to criminal negligence charges against two Arema officials and three others.
The reverse fixture was initially scheduled for March 5th, but the police postponed it due to the potential for further violence.
