Bordeaux’s chances of being promoted from Ligue 2 have been cast into uncertainty following the abandonment of their final match of the season.
The game was called off after a fan attacked Rodez midfielder Lucas Buades, who had just given his team a 22nd-minute lead.
Buades was pushed over and suffered a concussion, requiring him to be taken off on a stretcher.
Bordeaux needed a better result than Metz to secure promotion, but Metz won their final game 3-2 against Bastia and finished second behind champions Le Havre.
Bordeaux would have had to beat Rodez by four goals to gain promotion on goal difference, but Rodez were on their way to securing the victory they needed to avoid relegation, as Annecy lost 1-0 to FC Paris.
Referee Nicolas Rainville said:
“The elements are conclusive, the player cannot resume because [he is] concussed. We have respected the rules, namely that the match will not resume”
The French football governing body’s disciplinary committee will meet on Monday to decide on the appropriate action to take.
