Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been summoned to join the Sweden squad for their upcoming European Championship qualifiers, marking his return to international football after a year since his last cap.
Despite being sidelined due to a knee injury for much of the season, the 41-year-old AC Milan forward will face Belgium and Azerbaijan later this month with his national team.
Although Ibrahimovic retired from international football after Euro 2016, he returned in 2021 for their unsuccessful World Cup qualifying campaign.
According to boss Janne Andersson, Ibrahimovic will not be considered a starter, but his inclusion will provide more options for substitutions. Despite only making three appearances from the bench for AC Milan this season, the former Manchester United and Paris St-Germain striker remains Sweden’s all-time top scorer with 62 goals in 121 matches.
His most recent appearance for his country was against Poland in their World Cup qualification play-off loss in 2022.
