Despite scoring a hero’s double against Manchester United, Ilkay Gundogan did not receive a winner’s medal when Manchester City won the FA Cup.
With two goals from Gundogan, City defeated United 2-1. He broke the previous record for the fastest goal in an FA Cup final, blasting past David de Gea in just 12 seconds, and then gave them the lead again after Bruno Fernandes had tied the game for United with a penalty.
Gundogan goals won the match, but when the medals were awarded to the winners, he did not receive one.
Why Was Gundogan Not Given a Medal?
According to The Sun, the Football Association ran out of medals, therefore the 32-year-old was left out.
Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne were left without any medals because the rest of the team had already received them.
Goalkeeper Ederson ultimately gave De Bruyne his medal, leaving Gundogan to join his teammates in their celebrations without one. But one will be offered to the Germany international later.
