In the early hours of Wednesday, Nigeria’s Super Falcons emerged victorious with a 1-0 win over Costa Rica in their third and final game at the 2023 Revelations Cup held in Mexico.
This marks the team’s first triumph since their quarter-final victory over Cameroon, where they secured a 1-0 win at the 2022 Women’s Cup of Nations hosted in Morocco.
Nigeria’s Esther Okoronkwo scored the winning goal for her team in the 44th minute, securing a victory for the Falcons in their final game of the Revolution Cup.
This win was particularly satisfying for the team, as they had suffered defeats in their previous two matches against Mexico and Colombia, both by a narrow margin of 1-0. Overall, the Falcons showed significant improvement in their performance during this final game of the tournament.
It remains to be seen whether this victory has alleviated the pressure on coach Randy Waldrum to keep his position. As the nine-time African champions prepare for the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup, scheduled to take place in Australia and New Zealand in July, they also have another invitational tournament in Turkey coming up in April.
In terms of their World Cup campaign, Nigeria has been placed in Group A alongside hosts Australia, Olympic champions Canada, and the Republic of Ireland.
