AS Roma fans subjected referee Anthony Taylor to abuse as he was traveling back home from Budapest following the Europa League final on Wednesday.
The English referee was harassed by the fans at the airport, where bottles were thrown at him, someone grabbed at his backpack, and others hurled insults at him.
As a result, security escorted Taylor and his family through a private door to ensure their safety.
Taylor officiated the controversial match between Roma and Sevilla, where multiple players from both teams received bookings and even some individuals from the benches, including Jose Mourinho, were cautioned.
After the game, Mourinho was caught on camera confronting Taylor in the Puskas Arena car park, and he was heard calling him a “F*ckin Disgrace”.
The Professional Game Match Officials Board, the body in charge of officials in English football, released a statement on the matter, which read:
“The PGMOL is aware of videos circulating on social media showing Anthony Taylor and his family being harassed and abused at Budapest Airport.
“We are appalled at the unjustified and abhorrent abuse directed at Anthony and his family as he tries to make his way home from refereeing the UEFA Europa League final.
“We will continue to provide our full support to Anthony and his family”
Authorities may investigate the harassment of the official, who will return to England during the summer break.
