Barcelona Restored their 9 point lead at the top of the Last Liga table after a hard fought 1-0 win over Atlethic Bilbao.
Raphinha the former Leeds forward, scored the only goal in the game
He has now scored the only goal in consecutive matches, securing back-to-back victories for Barcelona. The win also restored Barcelona’s nine-point lead at the top of La Liga.
Raphinha’s goal came in first-half injury time, as he drilled the ball into the net.
Barcelona’s goalkeeper, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, made several fine saves to deny Bilbao, including a late goal ruled out for handball after a lengthy VAR check. Bilbao also had another effort cleared off the line in added time.
Barcelona’s win extended their lead over rivals Real Madrid, who had briefly cut the lead to six points after their win over Espanyol. The two teams are set to meet in El Clasico at the Nou Camp on Sunday.
Bilbao, who put up a spirited performance, remain in ninth place after suffering their 10th defeat of the season.
Barcelona’s top scorer, Robert Lewandowski, had an early opportunity but his shot was saved by Julen Agirrezabala.
This seemed to spark Bilbao, who went close twice in quick succession before Raphinha’s goal.
In the second half, Bilbao were the stronger side, but Ter Stegen made superb saves to deny them. Bilbao thought they had equalised through Inaki Williams, but the goal was ruled out for handball in the build-up
The Catalan giants are currently on 65 points while Real Madrid are second With 56 Points.
