In their first match following their World Cup victory, Argentina defeated Panama 2-0, with Lionel Messi scoring his 800th top-level goal.
This achievement places him alongside Cristiano Ronaldo as the only other player to reach this impressive milestone.
Messi’s remarkable goal-scoring record includes 672 goals over the course of 17 seasons for Barcelona and 29 for Paris St-Germain.
He has also scored a total of 99 international goals, with two of those coming in the World Cup final.
The 35-year-old Paris St-Germain forward scored an 89th-minute free-kick to add to Thiago Almada’s opener 11 minutes earlier, securing Argentina’s victory.
Messi’s next opportunity to add to his impressive tally of international goals will come when Argentina face Curacao on Tuesday.
