President Bola Tinubu on Monday night appointed his former Chief Security Officer, DIG Egbetokun Olukayode as the acting Inspector General of Police.
This is coming less than three months after the Police Service Commission approved Egbetokun’s role as a Deputy-Inspector General of Police, representing the South-West geopolitical zone of Nigeria.
DIG Egbetokun takes over from the retired DIG Johnson Babatunde Kokumo, who served until March 15 of this year. The appointment of Egbetokun as the new IG was made public through a statement from the Director, Information, Office of the Secretary-General to the Federation, Willie Bassey.
Her are some key vital things to know about the newly appointed Acting IGP:
- Egbetokun previously served as the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State.
- He is replacing Usman Baba in his new role as the acting IGP.
- In 1999, Egbetokun was chosen to be the Chief Security Officer to President Tinubu when he was the governor of Lagos State.
- Throughout his career, Egbetokun has held various positions within the Police Force, including Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos, Squadron Commander of Mopol 5 in Benin City, and Officer-in-Charge of the Anti-Fraud Unit in the FCT Command, Abuja. He has also served as Chief Superintendent of Police in Administration at the Lagos State Command Head Quarters in Ikeja, as well as the Area Commander in Osogbo, Osun State Command, and Gusau, Zamfara State Command, among other roles.
- Egbetokun graduated from the University of Lagos, Akoka, Yaba, Lagos, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics in June 1987. Before joining the Police Force, he briefly lectured Mathematics at Yaba College of Technology in Lagos. Furthermore, he holds a Master of Science degree in Engineering Analysis from UNILAG, a Postgraduate Diploma in Petroleum Economics from Delta State University, Abraka, and an MBA from Lagos State University, Ojo.
