Brentford and England striker Ivan Toney has been handed a ban from all football-related activities for a duration of eight months following his conviction for betting offences.
Last November, Toney was initially charged with 232 violations of the betting regulations, stemming from his time on loan at Scunthorpe while playing for Newcastle United back in 2017.
In December of the same year, the Football Association brought forward an additional 30 charges against him.
In response to the case, the FA released a statement declaring that Ivan Toney has been immediately suspended from engaging in any form of football or football-related pursuits for eight months.
“Ivan Toney has been suspended from all football and football-related activity with immediate effect for eight months, fined £50,000 and warned as to his future conduct for breaches of The FA’s Betting Rules”.
“The Brentford FC forward was charged with 262 breaches of FA Rule E8 in total between 25 February 2017 and 23 January 2021. The FA subsequently withdrew 30 of these breaches, and he admitted to the remaining 232.”
Eventually, the FA withdrew 30 of the charges, leaving Toney to admit his guilt in relation to the remaining 232 infractions.
Meanwhile, following a personal hearing, an independent Regulatory Commission has issued sanctions against Ivan Toney.
These sanctions stipulate that he will be allowed to resume training solely with his club for the remaining four months of his suspension, commencing on September 17, 2023.
The detailed justifications for these penalties from the Independent Regulatory Commission will be made public in due course.
The FA will await the publication of these reasons before providing any further comments on the matter. Toney has scored an impressive tally of 20 goals in 33 matches for Brentford this season.
