Popular US born Nigerian singer, David Adeleke better known for his stage name, Davido is the cover boy for the Forbes magazine Afrobeat music issue for April 2023.
Davido shared his thoughts on the relevance of Afrobeat music all over the world and what this means to Africa.
Davido while speaking on Forbes magazine revealed that he signs artists to his record label not because he wants to make money off them. He said he just wants to see them grow.
“My career has been so blessed. I haven’t been like signing artists because I want to make money from them. I just like to see them grow and know I was part of the success.”
He also said being around his dad shaped his career as an artist. He recalled how he watched his father handle his business as a billionaire, how it inspired him in the music business as well.
“I learned so much from being around my dad, watching him in the office, hearing him on the phone, seeing how he handled life. He’s very humble, principled and a strong Christian. Before I step on any stage, my team knows not to mess with my prayers.”
On how he managed his talent as youngster.
“I hid it from my family. The normal thing was to go to school, graduate and then work for my Dad”
On Afro beat music relevance, Davido revealed it wasn’t a thing of joy to be an African but today, the emergence of Afrobeat music has changed that.
“I can remember when it wasn’t cool to be from Africa; people would lie and say they were Jamaican. Now we have our own Billboard charts in the US and UK; that shows how serious the Western world is taking our music.”
Davido Timeless album was released on March 30,2023. It has become his highest charting Album surpassing a better time. The 13 track album was named the highest charting Album by an African artist.
