Thomas Muller has taken a swipe at Lionel Messi, suggesting that Bayern Munich always come out on top against the Argentine star in the Champions League.
This was proven once again in the 2022-23 season, with Bayern knocking Paris Saint-Germain out of the competition with a 3-0 aggregate win. Despite playing in a crucial second-leg match at the Allianz Arena, Messi was unable to make a significant impact as Bayern won 2-0.
This marks the fifth time Messi has been eliminated from the knockout stages of the competition by the German giants, including a memorable 8-2 defeat during his time at Barcelona in 2020.
“Things always go very well whenever we play against any of his (Messi) teams”. Muller said
Muller acknowledged that at the club level, Cristiano Ronaldo was a problem for Bayern when he played for Real Madrid.
“Ronaldo was our biggest problem, especially when he was at Real Madrid. He always scores against us and sometimes, they (Madrid) knocked us out of the Champions League because of his goals“.
Nevertheless, Muller still holds great respect for Messi’s World Cup performances and achievements.
Messi did defeat Bayern 4-0 in their first meeting back in 2009, he has struggled against them in recent years, including a 7-0 aggregate loss in the 2012-13 Champions League semi-finals.
