Even though AC Milan’s performance was still disappointing, the depressing jeers gave way to uplifting applause.
With a derby match against Inter Milan coming up in Serie A, the fans’ abrupt attitude change wasn’t entirely unexpected.
Milan’s poor start to the season has seen them fall from second place and five points behind leader Napoli to fifth place and 15 points behind. Contrarily, Inter has climbed to the second position, though it is still 13 points behind Napoli.
The audience booed Milan after their dismal 5-2 loss to Sassuolo, who are currently in 16th position. The reigning champions have now given up 12 goals in their last three games. They were also defeated by Inter in the Italian Super Cup and eliminated from the Italian Cup.
The team’s executives paid the fans a motivating visit on Wednesday in the wake of their encouraging display after the game on Sunday. Along with other club directors, Milan president Paolo Scaroni and director Paolo Maldini, a former Milan superstar, headed to the practice field.
They had lunch with the players after watching practice.
Scaroni reportedly informed the players, “We have enormous trust in you.” “We want to be on the field with you because we feel such a close affinity with you.”
