Ajax Midfielder, Steven Berghuis has received a three-game ban for the start of the 2023-24 season following an altercation with an FC Twente fan.
Footage of the incident shows Berghuis apparently throwing a punch at the fan in front of Ajax’s team bus after a 3-1 defeat on the last day of the season.
The 31-year-old later expressed regret for his actions.
“I regret my actions, I should not have done this,” said Berghuis in a statement.
“I’m used to it by now but people think they can just shout anything.
“My reaction doesn’t solve anything. I get that. It’s not good, I have an exemplary role as a player of Ajax“.
Ajax finished in third place in the Eredivisie and failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2009.
Berghuis, who was named Ajax’s player of the season for 2022-23, was already set to serve a one-game suspension for receiving a yellow card during the Twente match.
