Former Brazil Footballer, Pele is being Immortalized by a Portuguese dictionary.
The word ‘Pele’ is being added to the Portuguese language’s vocabulary as “unique, incomparable,” and “the best”.
With more than 125,000 signatures collected in support of the initiative, the Pele Foundation has contributed to making that possible. The illustrious Brazilian player, who participated in three World Cup victories with his nation, died on December 29, 2022, at the age of 82.
However, his legacy will endure forever, and he has now achieved immortality in the Portuguese dictionary.
Pele will be added to the dictionary, according to the publishers Michaelis, with the entry definition reading: “pe.lé adj.
That is someone who is unusual, who cannot be compared to anything or anyone due to their exceptional qualities, worth, or superiority.
Pelé was the nickname given to Edson Arantes do Nascimento (1940–2022), who is widely regarded as the greatest athlete to have ever lived.
The Pele Foundation expressed its appreciation for the news and their definition, saying:
“The word that was previously used to refer to the greatest in what you do is immortalized in the pages of the dictionary!”
“Together, we created history by inducting the king’s name into the Portuguese dictionary. Pele, which means the ‘BEST‘”.
Pele is recognized as one of the greatest players to have ever played the game and he scored over 1,000 goals during his extraordinary career, 77 of which came through 92 appearances for Brazil.
