English Championship Team, Burnley have secured promotion back to the Premier League on their first attempt with a victory over fourth-placed Middlesbrough.
The Clarets led by former Manchester City and Belgium Captain Vicent Kompany who had remained unbeaten in the league since November, took an early lead when Ashley Barnes redirected Josh Brownhill’s low shot into the back of the net.
Middlesbrough equalized just after half-time when Chuba Akpom, the Championship’s top scorer, scored from the spot after Cameron Archer was fouled in the penalty area by Josh Cullen.
However, Connor Roberts steered in the winner from Nathan Tella’s near-post cross, and Burnley saw out the rest of the game in comfort, sparking wild celebrations on the pitch and among their traveling fans.
With this victory, Burnley extended their lead over third-placed Luton to 19 points. Burnley has now secured promotion to the Premier League in each of their past three seasons in the second tier.
No team has won promotion to the Premier League with seven games remaining since the second tier’s rebranding in 2004. Burnley will now aim to secure the title, break the 100-point barrier, and become the first team to go unbeaten at home in a Championship season since Newcastle United in 2009-10.
