Emre Can has attributed Borussia Dortmund’s loss to Chelsea in the Champions League round of 16 clash to what he perceives as the “arrogant” conduct of the match referee.
Following Chelsea’s 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge, Can expressed his dissatisfaction with the referee’s decision to allow a retake of a penalty, which led to Kai Havertz scoring the second goal. Can also criticize the match official’s demeanor during the game in a post-match interview with Amazon Prime.
“Giving back an already taken penalty was a big joke, the first penalty was missed by Kai and the referee decided that it was going to be retaken. The referee’s arrogant decision was the major reason we lost the game”. Can said
The penalty was initially awarded to Chelsea in the second half after Marius Wolf was found to have handled the ball in the penalty box, but the decision was overturned by VAR. Although Havertz missed the initial penalty, Chelsea was given another opportunity to take it after Salih Ozcan was found to have entered the box prematurely and cleared the rebound.
The second penalty was successfully converted by Havertz, securing Chelsea’s victory over Dortmund 2-1 on aggregate.
