Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, a.k.a Mr P disclosed in another part of his interview with the 77 percent that he didn’t listen to any song from Fela Kuti until 10 years ago.
The singer said he heard about the legendary musician as a kid but he didn’t really listen to his music because he wasn’t a fan of his style of music.
Mr P when asked if he was influenced by Fala’s music or activism revealed that he is not full time Afro beat musician stating that his music genre is R & B which is very different from Fela’s style of music back in the days.
He further revealed that he started listening to Fela 10 years ago after he started traveling for shows and he realized that most of the things Fela said in his songs were true but it seemed like people neglected it.
He said “ I know him but I wasn’t a fan, I know him very well with all due respect but I wasn’t a fan because even till today, me Mr P, I am not a full time Afro beat singer. I’m an R&B artist . So it’s music. I probably started listening to it like 10 years ago. That’s when I started getting enlightened about what is happening in the world. I started traveling around the world. I realized that I thought they said Nigerians are richer than this country. So what is going on? Why are we not having good roads? Good health system and all that. So I started listening to them and he has been speaking the truth right from time but maybe people neglected it.
