Liverpool secured their first Premier League victory of 2023 with a 2-0 win over Everton in a derby clash on Monday.
Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo scored on either side of each half to ensure the reds win a league game for the first time in 2023. The result ended Liverpool’s run of four winless games, lifting them to ninth in the table.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp expressed his relief after the game, praising his team’s performance and their ability to play the game they wanted rather than the game Everton wanted to play.
He highlighted their ability to deal with set-pieces and the success of their counter-attacks. Meanwhile, Everton manager Sean Dyche felt his side started well but failed to recover after Salah’s goal.
He acknowledged Liverpool’s strength in the transition phase and identified sloppy passes and turnovers as the reason for their defeat. Despite the loss, Dyche remained optimistic, emphasizing the importance of taking three points from their first two games.
Liverpool travel to Newcastle next in the Premier League on Saturday.
