Paris Saint Germain forward, Kylian Mbappe has taken over the role of France captain from the retired Hugo Lloris.
The 24-year-old forward agreed to the proposal after discussing it with coach Didier Deschamps earlier on Monday when players arrived at the camp.
Lloris, the 36-year-old Tottenham goalkeeper, had been the team’s captain for over a decade but ended his international career in January following France’s loss in the World Cup final.
After Manchester United centre-back Raphael Varane also retired from international football after the defeat to Argentina in December, Atletico Madrid attacker Antoine Griezmann was named vice-captain.
Mbappe, who has played for his country 66 times, had been linked with the captaincy for several weeks and even scored a hat-trick in the World Cup final loss after helping France to win the title in 2018.
Mbappe is currently the vice-captain at PSG behind Brazil’s Marquinhos and recently led the team in the defender’s absence during their 2-0 loss to Rennes.
His first match as captain will be on Friday in the Euro 2024 qualifier against the Netherlands at the Stade de France.
