Aston Villa has made a significant addition to their football operations by appointing Monchi, the former sporting director of Sevilla, as their president of football operations.
Monchi, 54, previously worked alongside Villa manager Unai Emery at Sevilla, where they achieved great success together, winning three Europa League titles.
The announcement of Monchi’s appointment follows the news that Christian Purslow, the previous chief executive, will be stepping down from his position.
Monchi expressed his excitement about working with Unai Emery once again, recognizing him as one of the best managers in football.
During Monchi’s tenure as sporting director at Sevilla, the club achieved remarkable success. They won the Europa League an impressive seven times, with three of those victories coming under Emery’s leadership. Additionally, Sevilla secured the Copa del Rey twice and the European Super Cup.
Monchi’s impressive track record extends beyond his time at Sevilla. He also served as the sporting director at Roma from 2017 to 2019, during which the team reached the semi-finals of the Champions League.
The reunion of Monchi and Emery comes as Aston Villa qualified for the Europa Conference League following their seventh-place finish in the Premier League.
Nassef Sawiris, the chairman of Aston Villa, expressed his delight at Monchi’s appointment, emphasizing the strengthening of the world-class team both on and off the pitch. Sawiris described Monchi as a serial winner, much like Unai Emery.
Monchi is expected to commence his new role in July, pending the acquisition of a work permit.
