According to reports, there were unpleasant incidents following Napoli’s match with local rivals Salernitana on Sunday in Serie A.
The Campania derby ended in a 1-1 draw, with Salernitana scoring a late equalizer that delayed Napoli’s crowning as champions for the first time in 33 years.
After the final whistle at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, a Napoli fan who was also a local politician was allegedly attacked by Salernitana supporters, as reported by Corriere dello Sport.
The attack reportedly occurred after the fan was asked to remove a Napoli flag from his balcony. The incident was strongly condemned by local mayor Giuseppe Lanzara.
Lanzara stated that “You start asking to remove the flags of a favourite team from a balcony and you end up beating people up, acting as a sick fan. These people are simply thugs, and it has to be said out loud, without fear.”
He also pledged that the forces of law and order would take action soon to bring those responsible to justice.
Despite Napoli’s disappointment in the match, they remain on track to win the Scudetto. The team needed only two points from their final six games to secure the title, and they could even be crowned champions before their next match against Udinese on Thursday if other results go their way.
