Spain’s Sergio Ramos, the 2010 World Cup champion, has announced his retirement from international football after learning he won’t be selected by new manager Luis de la Fuente.
With 180 matches, the 36-year-old defender for Paris St. Germain is Spain’s all-time leader in caps.
He hasn’t competed for Spain since March 2021, and previous coach Luis Enrique didn’t include him in the World Cup roster.
On Thursday, Ramos wrote on social media, “The moment has come.”
“It’s time to bid our beloved and thrilling national squad farewell.
“It’s the conclusion of a journey that I had thought would last longer and leave me with a better impression, on par with all the success we had with the National team.
Ramos made his debut in 2005 as an 18 year old, and he retires as the most capped Spanish Player with 180 caps.
