According to reports, Manchester United’s goalkeeper David de Gea has declined the club’s initial contract extension proposal
The current contract of the Spanish goalkeeper at Manchester United is due to expire in June 2023. Although he has declined the initial extension offer from the club, De Gea is still engaged in negotiations, hoping to reach a mutually beneficial agreement.
Looking at the bigger picture, De Gea is currently the highest-paid goalkeeper in the world, earning a weekly salary exceeding £375,000.
However, at the age of 32, he understands that he cannot demand a renewal with the same financial terms, and must instead accept a lower pay package.
The report indicates that Manchester United has presented a reasonable offer to De Gea, but the player is not satisfied with the proposal, as he believes that his contributions on the field are not being adequately compensated.
Despite a rough start under manager Ten Hag, during which he was partly responsible for United’s 4-0 loss to Brentford, De Gea has become an essential figure in the team’s defense.
His remarkable save against Kelechi Iheanacho in United’s 3-0 victory over Leicester City in February earned him the Premier League save of the month award. The Dutch coach is impressed with his progress throughout the season and wishes for him to continue playing at Old Trafford, which is a crucial component of any potential extension agreement.
