Alejandro Garnacho’s hopes of participating in the U20 World Cup with Argentina have been dashed as Manchester United has won the selection battle.
Despite the 18-year-old winger’s desire to represent his country at the prestigious tournament, United was unwilling to release him due to their end-of-season schedule, which includes Premier League matches and an FA Cup final.
Garnacho had expressed his desire to play for Argentina to Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag, but United was firm in their reluctance to let him go.
As a result, Argentina will have to make do with alternative options for the U20 World Cup, which they will now host after Indonesia’s removal from hosting duties.
Garnacho had previously missed out on the South American U20 Championship in January and was eager to feature for his country this time around. The U20 World Cup is set to begin on May 20, with United’s fixtures to follow soon after.
