Following the MLS fixture between the New York Red Bulls and the San Jose Earthquakes, Dante Vanzeir, the Red Bulls forward, has issued an apology for using a racist remark during the game.
The match was paused for 20 minutes after the incident, with San Jose Earthquakes striker Jeremy Ebobisse alleging that a “racist remark” was directed at him after the game.
In his apology, Vanzeir expressed deep remorse for his actions and stated his commitment to being part of the change that needs to happen in the sport and the world.
He also accepted full responsibility for his behavior and vowed to take all necessary steps to grow and better himself. Vanzeir indicated his willingness to accept any suspension, fine, and counseling handed down by Major League Soccer and the club.
“I will do everything I can to be part of the change that needs to happen in this sport and our world. I also want to apologize to my teammates, coaches, the organization and our fans. I made a mistake and will take all the necessary steps to grow.
 I accept full responsibility for my actions. While I did not intend to cause any harm or offense with my language, I know that I did and for that I am deeply sorry. I will agree to any suspension, fine and counseling that is handed down by Major League Soccer and the club.
I will use this opportunity to better myself, reflect and dedicate my time and efforts to work with organizations that tackle racial injustice.”
The New York Red Bulls also released a statement, apologizing for the unacceptable events that took place during the match and condemning the use of racist language.
The team expressed regret over not removing Vanzeir from the game immediately after the incident and pledged to work towards eliminating such behavior from the sport.
