Real Madrid’s slim chances of retaining their La Liga title were kept alive by Marco Asensio’s winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Getafe.
Ahead of their Champions League semi-final second leg against Manchester City, Carlo Ancelotti made eight changes to the starting lineup resulting in a disjointed performance against a relegation-threatened Getafe side.
With only 20 minutes remaining, Asensio’s deflected shot finally broke the deadlock and secured the victory for Madrid. However, they still trail league leaders Barcelona by 11 points with only four games left in the season.
Barcelona will secure the title if they win their upcoming derby against Espanyol on Sunday. The game saw a rare start for Eden Hazard, only his second in the league this season, while Toni Kroos, Vinicius Junior, and Luka Modric were all brought on from the bench.
Madrid’s attention now shifts to next week’s clash at the Etihad Stadium, following a 1-1 draw in the first leg at the Bernabeu.
