Villarreal caused an upset at the Bernabeu, scoring two goals in the final 20 minutes to secure a 3-2 victory over Real Madrid in La Liga.
However, the drama didn’t end there as Madrid’s Valverde and Villareal’s Baena, who had clashed during the game, were reportedly involved in an altercation in the stadium’s car park after the match.
Valverde apparently followed through on his promise to confront Baena and allegedly punched him in the area where the team buses park.
Reports in Spain suggest that Villarreal possess video evidence of the incident and that the police have been informed.
According to anonymous sources cited by The Athletic, the dispute between the two players stems from a previous clash in the Copa del Rey in January, during which Baena directed a personal insult at Valverde.
In his response to the event, Baena insisted that he had never previously insulted Valverde.
“I am very happy with the impressive victory of the team on a stage like the Santiago Bernabeu, but at the same time very sad about the aggression I experienced after the game and surprised by what is being said about my person,” he wrote on Instagram. I utterly lied when I said that.
There is no clear indication that this act is going to be investigated, but both players might face charges and suspensions if they’re being found guilty.
