After Sevilla eliminated Manchester United on Thursday night from the Europa League, Erik ten Hag voiced displeasure with his team.
Manchester United absolutely capitulated, losing to Sevilla 3-0 and exiting the Europa League with a 5-2 overall score on a night when many rotation players had the chance to shine in a finely poised European battle in Seville.
After one of the worst performances of his tenure, Ten Hag vented his frustration.
“It’s obvious that it’s incredibly challenging to win a football game when you make such errors,” Ten Hag told BT Sport.
“We couldn’t have been unprepared for the game tonight. We gave it away, and this is a terrific opportunity and occasion to win something. We are the ones to blame“.
Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez‘s injuries forced United to switch back to the center-back pairing of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof, both of whom have had trouble getting consistent playing time under the Dutchman.
Due to the suspension of Bruno Fernandes as well, United absolutely fell apart.
Sevilla took an early lead in a half they dominated thanks to a catastrophic error involving Maguire and David de Gea.
Then they cruised to a three-goal lead in the second half thanks to more errors in a timid performance, with United’s number one looking noticeably off the pace in the same week he was reportedly offered a new contract.
United travel to wembley to take on an in form Brighton in the semi final of the FA Cup on Sunday.
