Sergio Aguero criticized Pep Guardiola’s decision to keep Julian Alvarez on the sidelines During Manchester City’s draw 1-1 with Real Madrid.
Manchester City and Real Madrid split the points in the first leg of the Champions League semifinal on Tuesday night at the Santiago Bernabeu thanks to long-range goals from Vinicius Jr. and Kevin de Bruyne.
Guardiola didn’t make a single substitute to try and change the outcome of the game, and neither club gave the other a single inch.
The Spanish manager had a number of attacking options at his disposal, including Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden, and Alvarez, who were all available as substitutes.
Guardiola’s strategy was called into doubt as a result of Aguero’s amazement at his Argentine compatriot’s performance.
“Why he didn’t put Julian on is what I don’t understand. I’m curious, but it’s Pep”.
“We need Julian to be active and have a spark. If it were up to me, I would start him in virtually every match” the former City striker remarked on the AlbicelesteTalk podcast.
Despite being second fiddle to Erling Haaland this season, Alvarez has scored 15 goals for City in all competitions.
