Folarin Balogun of Arsenal has decided to switch his international allegiance to the US national team instead of England, and FIFA has recognized his decision.
The 21-year-old, who plays for Reims in France on loan, was born in the US to Nigerian parents but he grew up ing England.
Balogun had represented England’s Under-21 team, however he withdrew in March due to an injury.
As a result of this decision, the striker will not play at the European Under-21 Championship anymore.
“The change of association of the player Folarin Jolaoluwa Balogun from England to the USA has been approved,” a Fifa spokeswoman told BBC Sport.
Balogun has 34 appearances for Reims this season and 19 goals in Ligue 1.
Speaking to the official website of US Soccer, Balogun claimed that the choice was “a no-brainer” and that he feels “at home.”
“When I told my family, especially my mother, they were all ecstatic”according to Balogun.
“It means more than people would realize to be able to represent the United States. I feel really privileged to have this chance, and I want to give it my all to help our team succeed”.
He earlier stated that he would be open to playing for Nigeria, but he has now chosen to become available for the United States.
Since he has not received a senior England cap, he was free to make this decision.
