In a thrilling match at St James’ Park, Arsenal clawed back Manchester City’s lead at the summit of the Premier League table to just one point with a routine 2-0 win over 3rd Placed Newcastle United.
Despite having played one more game than the reigning champions, Mikel Arteta’s side responded brilliantly to the pressure exerted by Manchester City’s win over Leeds United.
The encounter was a tense and action-packed affair, with both sides creating numerous chances in a frenzied atmosphere.
Newcastle, looking to strengthen their push for a Champions League spot next season, started at lightning pace and came close to scoring early on through Jacob Murphy, who hit the post and had a penalty overturned by VAR.
However, it was Arsenal who showed their strength, with inspirational captain Martin Odegaard continuing his excellent form by scoring his 15th Premier League goal of the season from 25 yards out after just 14 minutes.
The rest of the game was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams producing excellent opportunities to score.
Arsenal’s keeper Aaron Ramsdale made several vital stops from Joe Willock and Fabian Schar, while Alexander Isak headed against the post for Newcastle.
In the end, it was Schar who turned the ball into his own net in the 71st minute, as Arsenal broke clear to seal the three points.
The result puts pressure on Manchester City, who will now have to win their next game to maintain their lead at the top of the table.
