Chelsea spent a whopping £107 million to acquire Enzo Fernandez from Benfica in January, hoping that the Argentine World Cup winner would make an immediate impact at Stamford Bridge.
However, Fernandez’s performances have been inconsistent, leading to criticism from some quarters. Despite the underwhelming start, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has come out in support of the midfielder and believes that he has what it takes to become a superstar for the club.
“He’s a fantastic talent,” Lampard said, adding, “For a young player to achieve what he’s achieved in this footballing year is amazing. It’s a difficult moment to come to the club, but it’s a challenge that will make him better. He is the future of Chelsea.”
With Chelsea out of the Champions League and in 11th place in the Premier League, expectations for the club have hit rock bottom.Lampard thinks that this could be an opportunity for Fernandez to develop his skills with less pressure.
Even though the decision to pay a premium price for him has backfired so far, Lampard remains convinced that Fernandez will eventually fulfill his potential and become a key player for Chelsea.
