Juventus have made a significant announcement, signaling their clear intention to withdraw from the European Super League project.
Despite their initial commitment to the venture, alongside Real Madrid and Barcelona, and their shared emphasis on clubs assuming a leading role in organizing competitions rather than relying on UEFA, Juventus has now decided to break ranks.
In a letter addressed to Real Madrid and Barcelona, Juventus has formally requested discussions that will primarily revolve around “the potential Juventus exit from the Super League Project.”
This move marks a departure from their previous stance and demonstrates their willingness to reconsider their involvement in the controversial league.
Juventus has expressed their commitment to adhere to legal obligations and indicated that they will engage in further communication in accordance with the law, subsequent to the forthcoming talks and their evaluation thereof.
It appears that Juventus had been hopeful of a favorable ruling from the European Courts of Justice regarding UEFA’s monopoly as a competition organizer and its ability to exclude clubs that establish rival competitions.
This anticipation may have influenced their decision to explore the possibility of an exit from the Super League.
The past few months have been tumultuous for Juventus, beginning with an initial 15-point deduction imposed by the Italian Football Association for violations of financial regulations.
Although this punishment was eventually overturned, a subsequent hearing resulted in a 10-point penalty that the club ultimately accepted.
Adding to their woes, on Sunday, Juventus experienced a disappointing turn of events as former player Paulo Dybala scored a last-minute goal for Roma, effectively securing a spot in the Europa League and denying Juventus qualification for the Champions League.
Consequently, Juventus finished seventh in the league standings and will instead participate in the Europa Conference League.
It is worth noting that, had it not been for the 10-point deduction, they would have secured a Champions League berth at the expense of AC Milan.
