During a recent Serie A match between Roma and Sampdoria, home fans were heard directing racist chants at Dejan Stankovic, the opposing team’s manager.
However, Jose Mourinho, the coach of Roma, took a stand against the derogatory chants and stopped the fans from continuing.
He emphasized that Stankovic is a great man and a dear friend who has a family and kids, and it’s not right to subject him to such abuse.
After the game, Mourinho spoke to reporters and expressed his support for his friend, stating that while their fans are great, his friends should not be subjected to such treatment.
In his post-match interview with reporters, Mourinho stated, “I took action for a dear friend and a highly respectable person who has a family to think about. The derogatory chants were unacceptable, and I wanted to put an end to it. While our fans are excellent, I couldn’t bear to see my friends being subjected to such treatment.”
Roma emerged victorious with a 3-0 win thanks to goals from Georginio Wijnaldum, Paulo Dybala, and Stephan El Shaarawy.
Mourinho is no stranger to Stankovic having coached him back at Inter Milan between 2008 and 2010. The pair won the UEFA Champions League together.
