In their impressive Serie A debut season, Monza added newly crowned Serie A Champions Napoli to their list of defeated teams with a 2-0 win on Sunday, thanks to goals from Dany Mota and former Napoli striker Andrea Petagna.
This victory marks Monza’s fourth win in a seven-match unbeaten streak and places them in ninth position, level on points with Fiorentina, who also won their match against Udinese 2-0.
Although the defeat means little to Napoli, who have already secured their first league title since 1990, Torino joined Monza and Fiorentina on 49 points in tenth place, following their 1-0 victory over Verona in the day’s early match.
Verona, who lost to Spezia, the surprise winners against AC Milan on Saturday, fell into the relegation zone, with both clubs locked on 30 points.
In the other match involving AS Roma and mid-table Bologna, both teams failed to score, resulting in a goalless draw.
Roma’s coach, Jose Mourinho, opted for an energy-saving strategy ahead of his team’s Europa League semifinal second leg against Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday, leaving striker Paulo Dybala and goalkeeper Rui Patricio out of the squad.
Roma’s winless run in Serie A extended to five games, and they remain in sixth place with 59 points, one point ahead of Atalanta in seventh and two points behind AC Milan in fifth.
