A top-flight football match in Argentina between River Plate and Defensa y Justicia at the Monumental stadium in Buenos Aires was halted when a tragic incident occurred when a fan fell to their death from a grandstand.
The match was immediately suspended by referee Fernando Rapallini, and the area was cordoned off by police and firefighters.
“The medical service immediately arrived at the area of the incident, as did the police and various security agencies,” a club statement said.
“The Sivori Alta grandstand was at 90% of its capacity. At the time of the fall, there was no intervention by third parties.
It was also verified that there was no situation of violence in the stands or around it”
River Plate officials confirmed that the supporter, identified as Pablo Marcelo Serrano, had died at the scene and an investigation was underway.
The area remained closed for 24 hours to gather evidence. The club expressed deep sadness and the league shared in the pain and suffering of the fan’s family and friends.
