Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez made history by scoring the first hat-trick in an FA Cup semi-final since 1958, as his team outclassed Sheffield United at Wembley and kept their quest for the Treble on track.
Despite Sheffield United’s valiant efforts throughout the match, Mahrez’s first goal from the spot, just two minutes before halftime, signaled City’s dominance.
The Algerian forward then added a second goal just after the hour mark, taking advantage of a gap in the Blades’ defence with a solo effort.
Mahrez completed his hat-trick, and secured his place in FA Cup history, by scoring City’s third goal from Jack Grealish’s cross in the 66th minute.
The victory allowed City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, to make substitutions and rest some of his key players ahead of a crucial Premier League match against current leaders Arsenal on Wednesday.
City’s successful week saw them advance to the Champions League semi-final and secure a place in the FA Cup final against either Brighton or Manchester United, while their main rivals, Arsenal, dropped points in the league.
