Atletico Madrid hammered Cadiz 5-1, with Antoine Griezmann scoring twice. The victory took Atletico above their rivals, Real Madrid, into second place in La Liga, but they still trail league leaders Barcelona by 13 points.

Valencia earned a 1-1 draw against fifth-placed Villarreal, but they remain in 17th place, tied on points with 18th-place Getafe, who defeated Celta Vigo 1-0.

Griezmann scored two goals in the match, the first just two minutes in, to give Atletico a comfortable lead.

He has been in superb form this season, with 13 goals and 13 assists in La Liga. Although it is too late for Atletico to win any trophies this season, surpassing Real Madrid in the league offers some consolation.

Alvaro Morata added the third goal for Atletico in the 49th minute, and Yannick Carrasco converted a penalty for the fourth.

Chucky Lozano scored a consolation goal for Cadiz, who are 15th and only one point above the relegation zone. But Nahuel Molina scored Atletico’s fifth goal immediately after to seal the victory.

Elsewhere, Valencia’s Samuel Lino canceled out Villarreal’s Nicolas Jackson’s opener at Mestalla, saving the hosts from their fourth defeat in six games and keeping them just outside the drop zone.

Getafe won 1-0 thanks to Enes Unal’s early penalty, putting pressure on Espanyol, who are 19th and three points behind. Espanyol will visit Sevilla on Thursday.

The draw for Villarreal hurt their chances of qualifying for the Champions League, as they now sit seven points behind fourth-placed Real Sociedad, who defeated champions Real Madrid on Tuesday.
